Blogger assingment number 'television Addiction" number #3
by. Joerel Morales
Hello everyone according with this article we can know more about other kind of addiction the television addiction In the article we can learn that Television addiction is other form of addiction to our society In the article by Marie Winn she said " People often refer to being "hooked on TV". And I think that is a serious issue in the American people. In my country we don't have all the technology and the people prefer to play a sport than be all the time in front of the TV. In the television you can learn good things and bad things that is the reason that we need to first educate our children and then explain to our children the effects of the TV in the human life. In the article said that television viewing in the light of the conditions that define serious addictions think that the people need other resources like sports, arts and the music to be out of the TV.
In many of the cases of the television addiction the person who perform this action is a person that is shy, bored and find in the Television the instrument of his life. I think that people need in some cases medical help because sometimes is tough get out of that addiction.
I can conclude that the Television addiction is one of the most dangerous kinds of addiction in the life and if the people that are addicted to the TV need to ask for medical help and find other things to do.

Blog Assignment #2
Name : Young-Kyun Lee
1. Write a 300 word reaction to the article on cyber habits. Post it to the blogsite for our class.
- In the article, “Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick” (The Ohio State Lantern, April 1, 2002), Meg Kociemba states that although high speed-Internet helps students to make their job easily like sending email or searching article, computer addiction becomes a serious problem between college students. When I read this part, I totally agree with the author’s idea. In some positive side, through high speed-Internet, I am able to check my email or search information anytime with my computer. In some negative side, however, many students, especially who are living in dormitory, use to play a computer game all night through LAN(local area network) with their friends instead of sleep or study. This living pattern disturbs school life of students. They may fall a sleep during class or may even absent class in the morning and afternoon. College students are addicted by computer games while computer addiction may more harmful for younger students like elementary or middle school students. Orzack, who is a specialist for studying computer addiction, states it also will be hard for students to maintain a good relationship between friends. I agree with her idea. Nowadays, young students do not meet their friends or like physical exercises so far. After class, they usually connect internet and enjoy online game or chat with their friends, not to face-to-face. In my opinion, I think computer addiction is a kind of mental disease. In fact, in our country, Korea, there was a horrible accident a few years ago. A middle school student who was addicted by the computer game, the name of “Diablo II” killed his younger brother. The reason why he killed his bro was that he was just wondered if he hit his bro by hand axe like in game, bro would die or not. Therefore, it is important that computer addicts should be controlled under their parents.
2. Read one of your classmate’s reactions to the article on cyber habits. Write a 300 word response to it and post it to the blogsite for our class.
- I have a chance to respond Min Wang’s writing. When I read her article, I was a little surprised because we have a similar situation. She points out that many children who enter new school got a computer as a gift from their parents. And She was concerned about computer addiction, especially computer game. She also tells that her little cousin had been failed term. I also agree with her idea. We usually get the computer when children are elementary students. A research organization announced that of total population, 6 out of 10 people use internet. Of 6 people, over 80% are between 10 and 30 aged. Many young children are lacked about what is right or wrong. They look like live in their own cyber-world. They make friends through the online games or chatting programs like MSN or AOL. They do not like to meet face to face. They hide who they are, and even they may pretend to be someone on Internet. Sometimes, I often have heard a ridiculous news which a young child killed someone in real world. I also was worried about that. When I was young, I have no computer. But, I did not feel a boring because I used to play baseball with my friends or talk about each other while face to face. I agree with her idea about it will be a serious problem. She indicates that to prevent her cousin’s computer addiction, his parents must control his computer activities. Of course, most young children still do not have computer addiction, but we should recognize that they are also addicted by computer game whenever. We have to keep looking young children carefully.
response to the article by joey park
The usage and significance of computers and the internet are growing. If one does not have computer with the internet, he or she could have numerous disadvantages because of it. In school, many classes offer lecture notes and assignments on the web site, send important information by using e-mail, and some of assignments should be done on the internet, so he or she might miss lots of school work.
Although the use of computer and internet is crucial, some students use the computer and internet for other benefits. In the article “Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick”, Orzack said that some college students use computer more than a tool for school and it becomes an addiction. I totally agreed with what she said about that, because I have seen many cases in the article. When I was in Korea, I have some addicted friends. They do not get their work done and do not sleep regularly because of doing playing on-line games. They also do not participate with any social activities and have trouble with keeping the relationship with friends. Therefore, by playing on-line games, they just hurt their health by themselves. In my opinion, playing on-line games is harmful for students as Orzack mentioned, because an addicted students’ GPA is usually low and his health condition and sleep cycle are abnormal compare to other students who are not addicted. While other students use computer and the internet for their assignments, the sources of information, and e-mails, addicted students use them as a playing tool which hurts their health and lowers their GPA.
The computer and the internet is useful; without them the lives of students are less convenient and more complicated. However, some students use them as more than tool for school work, which is definitely harmful for students. Thus, I completely agreed with what she said about computer addiction.
response to sungwan kang's reaction by joey park
By reading Sungwan Kang’s response, I think about what the situation of Korea and agreed with the article once again.
As he mentioned, last year, a guy, who got married and had children went to “PC room” which is very popular in Korea, played on-line game called Lineage for about a day constantly, and died. “PC room” is a place that one goes there by paying for on-line games. This case shows that the negative effects of playing on-line games caused by wide spreading of “PC room”. In Korea, the problem of playing on-line games is not only for high school students or college students but also for elementary students, middle school students and workers. When I was in middle school, the “PC room” just came out, and I was one of the addicted students for a while. Luckily I was addicted during summer vacation, so I did not get too much negative effects. However, during the summer vacation, I did not eat properly or regularly and did not study hard enough for preparing the next semester. One of the problems of computers and the internet is chatting as he mentioned. On-line chatting is also extremely addictive as well as on-line computer games. The biggest problem of chatting is that one can be anonymous. People who enjoy on-line chatting tend to pretend to be another person by lying to others.
In Korea, the problem of computers and the internet is not only for college students as shown in the case of the man who died at “PC room”. Therefore, in the United States, computer addiction also might be a problem of whole society as well. In my opinion, it is one’s responsibility to check the time of playing games or on-line chatting not to get addicted of computers and the internet.
Response to Se Hoon Kim’s reaction by Yong Min Bea
As the reaction of Se Hoon Kim, I agree with him that the students who are addicted to computer usually are the one who are bored. Even I play the online game like Gostop that people play card with unknown people to get more imaginary money when I am really bored. In Korea, I read an article that some college students were playing game without sleeping and exercising and hang out with friends, and they have failed the all classes. When I read the article, I was very serious about playing game, because I can be the one. After I read the article, I do not spend too much time to play games. And I also agree with him that addiction of computers cause destruction of life style. For example, I have experienced with the sleep cycle are interrupted, but it was over the summer break. I could not go to bed, because I was so curious after where I have gone. And sometimes I could not go to bed, because I wanted to surpass others. It interferes the sleep cycles. But I do not agree the third point of Se Hoon’s reaction that people who are addicted to computers seem to be dull, hard to talk to others, and selfish. I disagree because they are mostly out-going people who want to talk to someone get to know each other, and they share their tactics with people. I do not know why they are selfish. Sometimes they make some new friends by the game or the online game, because they share information friendly. I am not saying that computer addiction is good, but the people who addicted to computers are not bad.
Response of Jongsik's article by HONG SORA
In his article, he points out the serious computer addiction especially gaming, and tells us side effects it brings about. Two years ago, actually I used to play game, Starcraft, a lot and has hooked on it. It changed my day and night, causes losing my appetite. Also I always thought about strategic to win others, and it made me to be sensitive my scores, so much as it appeared in my dream. I developed symtoms of computer addiction but I could kick that habit. My experiences have shown that the most important thing to cure addiction is self-control. That time, I tried to be busy everyday, and remove the game from my computer.
These days, young people talk using game words, and think of someone as behind the time who can't understand their words. And many young people want to be a progamer yearning to them. They also call the people who addict to gaming "mania", not just "addicts". I know they like to game and maybe have to play game with their freinds to keep up with others, but it's a big social problem. The game is harmful their physical and mental health, in addition they can get nothing from playing game.
The trouble is that when we think that we are addicted, we don't know how we come out from them. I think it may be useful to refer to cyber addiction service center where can help addicts and give them many informations. And adults should help them to have critical eyes to distinguish between real world and imagine world. I think it no longer makes sense that I play games. It is just a game to spend rest time for fun, not a goal.
Respond to "Students Find Cyber Habit Hard Hard to Kick" by HONG SO RA
Maressa Orzack, in "Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick" writes about what computer addiction is, the signs and characteristics of addiction, and what problems it brings about. Consequently, she tells us how it is serious. These days, cyber addiction become an object of public concern as computer user rate goes on. I also felt that problems become intensified when I saw a piece of news that some people died of disease, general paralysis, because he sat during three days infront of computer. Like all other addictions, it seems to me that it is a desease which affects oneself as well as others.
As she points out in article, cyber addiction give rise to ill effects, largely, physical and mental problems. I think symtoms of computer addiction start with physical problems such as back ashes, eating irregularities, and migraine headaches and run down a long liist of psychological symtoms as well including depression, lying to friends and family and irritation In reality, modern persons are under stresses, so they want to free themselves from real world to cyber space, and make good relationship in cyber space where others don't know who they are really. With exception of gaming she stresses out, internet itself can be addiction, for example, chatting, checking e mail box, joinning communities or making blogs.
Still, I believe that computer addiction can be treated like all other addictions. I think the most important thing to kick bad cyber habit is self-control. He, or she who feel they are addict to computer has to strive to be released from cyber space. And they have to draw a sharp line between real world and cyber world. Computer is just a means for human life, so we should not be under the control of it.
Response to Gulsah's response to "Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick "
Emi Aizawa
I believe Gulsah wrote several important facts about the article, "Student Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick". At first, she mentioned about how internet connection and a computer are important for especially international students. I strongly agree with the opinion. As same as her, I get information of my country through internet and it is my daily habit because even though I do not live there, I always want to know what is happening in Japan. Also e-mail is essential for me to communicate my family and friends. Like me, most international students are isolated from their family and old friends, so they need to have a device to communicate, and e-mail is the easiest and fastest way to do that. Therefore, I believe it is really true that a computer is crucial for foreign students. Another significant point in her response is her critique of generalization of addicts' typical character. I also think people who are not in this category could be addicted to a computer. For example, I have a friend whose personality is completely opposite from character described in the article, but once he starts playing on-line game he can not help playing it, and he stays in front of a computer all day long without eating anything. Thus, online game is powerful to attract any one, so to describe characteristic of addicts is impossible. Finally, she claimed addicts need help of a professional. Addict means it is beyond control, and it is mental disorder. Also other kind of addicts such as drugs and alcohol, those patients have a specialist to talk. Therefore, there is no wonder computer addicts need other people's assistant to recover. To train people as computer addicts specialist is one of the solutions for this problem, and it can brake expansion of harmfulness of computer addiction. I believe those three points are meaningful opinions toward the article.
Response to "Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to KIck"
Emi Aizawa
In the article, Kociemba wrote according to Orzack, a fantasy world fascinates especially college students. I strongly agree with the opinion. It is because a college life is hard and stressful, so I believe not only a few students want to run away and forget about their disagreeable lives. Despite students' scarifying their time for sleeping, watching TV, chatting with friends and spending time as much as they have, for studying, the amount of assignment and reading is just beyond their control and often it is impossible to finish everything with satisfaction. Moreover, their effort dose not reward all the time. For example, even though a student tries his or her best, a score of a test dose not always please him or her. In this kind of situations, I am sure people feel disconsolate and depressed with reality they face. In contrast, there is no pain or suffer in a virtual world. Moreover, if a player wants, he or she can create a new his or her ideal lives any time. Furthermore, a network game is changeable and interactive, so it makes people feel as if they are living in the world not just playing. In other word, an imaginary world looks like more comfortable and convenient place to live. We, human beings, are sometimes not mentally strong enough to endure, so there is no wonder college students, having hard lives, are powerfully attracted by an imaginary world and prefer to stay there. I believe college students' tendency to be addicted is inevitable. Therefore, I believe all college students even if they do not match the personalities described in the article, have potential to be addicts, and it is impossible to categorize what kind of person is tend to be addicted to a computer. I believe a college life and a computer is not separateable and college students have high possibility to be addicts, so it is worth for college students to read the article "Student Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick" and consider how they can handle their college lives without being addicted to a computer.
Thomas Kim 1-1
In her article, Meg Kociemba describes about the computer addiction of University society. According to Maressa Orzack, who is a psychologist and computer addiction researcher, some college students spend most of their time sitting in front of computer and playing games rather than outdoor activity and study. She discusses that these students may lose relationships with their friends, fail their school work, and ruin their mental and physical health. About Orzack’s opinion about the computer addiction, I totally agree that and want to get more information about the preventive measures of computer addiction.
While I read about the symptoms and characteristic of computer addicted students, I began to worry about my self. I am an anti-outgoing person who prefers to stay at home and my family is tens of thousands of miles away from me. Furthermore, I have a brand new computer with 17” LCD monitor, which I can use any time when I want, in my room. Although I don’t like the computer games, I spend a lot time to read Korean newspaper or magazines. Indeed, it affects my study and other plans which are much more important than read the stories from the opposite side of the earth. I keep trying not to read or access Korean website, however it is only successful for few days.
After I read about the Kociemba’s article, I thought she should have put the solutions of computer addiction. As in my case, even though I knew what my problem is, it is hard to solve by myself. In my view, trying to outdoor exercise or having new hobby, which is not related with computer, will be helpful for that problem. Because if someone who addicted something can have less time to be with the source of the problem, than he/she can have much more chance to prevent to do it. However, we can’t just be away from computer because it is a crucial tool for living in this world. Therefore, I also suggest self-discipline for computer using. Making time plan and restricting harmful websites by oneself may be good solution. If someone can control his/her time and way in front of the computer, he/she can have no problem being with computer. As I mentioned above, computer itself is a useful tool for every people. If people can manage themselves and find most appropriate way to prevent computer addiction for them, they’ll not suffering from computer addiction.
Thomas Kim 1-2
In her reaction writing, Minwang describes her cousin who seems to have difficulty with managing his life due to computer game. On the same manner, Ki Wook shows his own example that he almost failed his schoolwork due to his computer game addiction. I also have some difficulty to control myself about using computer, for example, yesterday I spent about four hours for reading Korean novel on the one of the Korean websites. Including me, all three of us show inappropriate computer use, which can bring harmful affect for our lives. I feel sympathy for Minwang’s cousin, especially, because many Korean teenagers have same problem as him. Some students keep skipping their school for playing computer games. About a year ago, at worst case, a teenager killed another computer game player who has an item of popular Korean online role playing game Lineage. This tragic accident caused because that people didn’t distinct between rear and fantasy world.
Even though computer is a useful tool which is also a crucial for our lives, I would suggest that Ming family should remove a computer from her cousin. As a matter of fact, except for special kids like Bill Gates, I think computer is nothing but game cube for teenagers. And I also suggest to his cousin to get another hobby which can do it out of his room. Although he has no interest about playing sports, go to movie for play will be a great choice. Because China has a lot historical places, remains and other cultural legacies, I think it isn’t that hard to find the alternatives. In conclusion, I suggest Ming’s cousin that gets away from computer and finds another thing to spend his time healthier than before.
Response to "Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick" by Yong Min Bea
In these days, the computer is like a vital thing in our life. We can not live without the computer, because we use it for our schoolwork and communication. Some of our homework has to be done by the computer. In the article, “Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick”, Maressa Orzack, a psychologist, says that computer addiction is harmful to students because it interferes with sleep cycles, time to do homework and damages relationships with friends. I agree with her because I saw and heard many people do not get their homework done by the due date for playing games. When they are playing game, most of people wants to surpass others and finish the mission. This is the reason they do not know when to stop the game. Because they do not know when to stop, they keep playing and playing without doing anything but the game over the whole night. Not only their sleep cycles are interrupted, but also their health is worsened. For instance, in Korea, the internet is highly developed. Because the internet is remarkably fast, enormous students fell into playing the online game, especially the college students who have a lot of spare time. They were playing game constantly during the whole day. It hurts one’s relationship with friends because it reduces the time to hang out with friends.
There is one thing that I do not agree in this article. In the article, Orzack says that the computer addicted students tend to be those students who are bored and shy. Some people play games because they want to have a fun. Sometimes the computer game helps to know and understand something. For example, I play a game called “Need for Speed”, which is a car racing game. I did not know anything about the parts of the car, but I learned many of the names and functions of the parts by playing the game. And also I do not think that shy people play the game, but they are out-going and interesting people. In order to play some of the game, sometimes one needs help to solve or accomplish the mission. The shy people can not ask to someone to know the information, but the out-going people can ask people to know the information in order to finish the game.
Response to JongSik’s reaction by Boram:
When I was reading his response to the article, “Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick”, I was smiling the whole time because I totally agreed with what he was saying. It is so true that in Korea, computer games or online games became incredibly popular ever since computer industry was developed in early 90’s. All people, regardless of age and gender, have been spending their time on checking e-mails, playing games, or chatting with their friends. Also, I agree with that there are good amount of people who are literally addicted to computer games. I remember that when I was in middle school, all my guy friends were obsessed about the online games. All they were talking about was computer games, and I’ve heard every game title that JongSik mentioned among their “own” conversations.
I think one of the main reasons that made tons of people in Korea addicted to computer games is that we brought a concept of “online game zone”. There are uncountable online game zones in Korea. What you do in that place is you just pay money according to how long you want to stay as in hours, and you play online games until you THINK you are done, as long as you pay the right amount of money. Therefore, it is indeed extremely popular among all students.
As I mentioned in my response that the addiction is crucial to interruption in sleep cycles, JongSik stated as well that there are lots of people whose days and nights have been changed due to an extreme amount of time they spend on games. I also agree that people who are addicted to computer games don’t get enough opportunities to socialize with their friends. It is so funny how he said that the computer is going to be their only friend in the near future.
Respond to Kiwook Junk’s reaction by Islam Ahmed
I want to make a response about what Kiwook said. Actually, I liked his summary because he was balanced and because he supported his opinion by evidence.
I think Kiwook was very balanced in his thoughts. He did not just agree with what the writer said; however, he said that the computer addiction has advantaged and disadvantages. Unlike the article “students find cyber habit hard to kick” which was not very much balanced. For instance, Kiwook stated that one can make friends over the internet. On the other hand he also stated that internet addiction affects sleep cycle .
The second reason why I think Kiwook wrote a very good reaction is that he supported his opinion by evidence and that was when he talked about his experience of how he made friends over the internet and how internet addiction affected his sleep cycle.
To conclude, I think that the writer of the article was right when she said that computer addiction affects sleep cycle and time devoted to homework; however, I do not agree with her when she states that students who develop computer addiction are shy, bored or unable to mange their first year away from their parents. I think she just wanted to support her idea that internet addiction has a lot of disadvantages. There are a lot young men and women who go to game cafes to play these games; even though, they have computers in their homes. So, that tells us that these people are not necessarily unsocial.
Response to Song, Seung ho’s response of Students Find Cyber Hard to Kick by Sung-wan Kang
I read Song, Seung-ho’s response to the article, “Students Find Cyber Habit to Kick”. He agrees with Meg Kociemba’s idea that computer addiction is very harmful to students. At the same time, he discusses that the high-speed Internet lines have a good side. I agree with his point. He said that the high-speed Internet has very useful tool in some aspect, and it is harmful in another aspect. He points out that whether the high-speed Internet lines are harmful or not depends on how we use internet.
Computer addiction makes people unsociable since they spend too much time with only computers. In Korea, many students stay in game rooms for a whole day to play games. They never realize how much time they are spending for playing game. It really hurts their mental and physical conditions. They should be careful when they use Internet.
Like Song said in his response, Internet gives student a lot of advantages. Students use internet connection for finding information they need, and doing their schoolwork. In addition, they can make new friends over the Internet. Song disagree with an idea that computer game makes people unsociable. In some case, people chat and make many friends, and they even meet in real world.
Now Internet became an essential tool in modern society. Well developed Internet lines provide both advantages and disadvantages. How we use the high-speed Internet is our responsibility. Students should be more careful and discreet to use Internet. If we use computer properly with care, it is very helpful to us in many aspects of school life.
response to the article by boram kim
In this article, the author, Meg Kociemba, is stating that computer addiction is harmful to students because not only they don’t get their work done, but also their sleep cycles are interrupted. There are some points that I do not agree with the author. The symptoms that the author described may be a little exaggerated, but I agree with that spending too much time on computer games is truly harmful for students’ lives. It is absolutely fine when one plays the computer game to take a rest or to have fun during their free time (but not a lot though). However, it is pretty hard to keep in track of time when one starts to get involved in the game and enjoy it.
According to the author, the symptoms or certain characteristics that computer addicts tend to have included loss of relationships and inability to leave the computer alone. I’ve seen many of my friends who are on the computer for hours just playing the games. Of course I understand that the game is pretty interesting and all, but most of the time, it is just absurd. It just made me so frustrated when I once visited my friend’s house, and he kept on playing games. When I asked him that how he could just go on and on, he just simply replied, “I couldn’t help it. It was irresistible.”
I don’t think there is anything that other people can do about computer addiction. The only one who can solve the problem is a student himself. He just got to control himself over the amount of time he spends on computer and keep in track of works he gets done.
However, in this article, I think the author is talking about the same thing over and over. It seems like that the first paragraph is the summary about the whole article itself, and rest of the part just supports the main idea.
As she points out in article, cyber addiction give rise to ill effects, largely, physical and mental problems. I think symtoms of computer addiction start with physical problems such as back ashes, eating irregularities, and migraine headaches and run down a long liist of psychological symtoms as well including depression, lying to friends and family and irritation. Response to Min Wang’s response by Kiwook Jung
I read Min Wang’s response which Min agrees with original article, “Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick,” but partly objects to the article. In the original article, Meg Kociemba focuses on harm of a computer addiction for college students. But Min emphasizes that a computer addiction is more dangerous to middle school student than college students by giving an example of China and her little cousin. I also agree with Min’s opinion that middle school students are more vulnerable to a computer addiction because I think that younger people are tent to be less considerable than older people. For example, in my case, I was also a kind of computer addicted people when I was in middle school. But as I grew up, I could get rid of addiction.
Besides, Min said that so many efforts to prevent computer addiction for her cousin are useless because of too many internet café in China. In case of my country, we have same problems. There are too many internet café, and many young people go there after school. I also agree that it is extremely difficult for parents to protect their children from a computer addiction because they cannot be with children every single hour. Now I realize that my parent might have same solicitude that families of her cousin may have.
In my opinion, as people are getting old, they possibly get rid of addiction by themselves, like I did before. But it is better not to be addicted when they are young.
Response to “Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick” by Se Hoon Kim
In the article, “Students Find Cyber Habit to Kick”(The Ohio State Lantern, April 11,2002), Meg Kociemba states that addiction of computers have a bad influence to students, nevertheless it is good devices for school’s works. In my opinion, I agree with her, because addiction of computers interfere their time, life style, and social relationship. The most important reason why I agree on this is that students who are addicted to computers usually have lack of time to do, said Maressa Orzack, psychologist. For example, in my country, South Korea, lots of people enjoy online game like Gostop that people play card with unknown people to get more money; furthermore some people who are addicted extremely to it spend all day to get useful item for the game. It can become serious problem for college students, because they should spend more time for studying than playing game. Secondly, as she mentioned about sleep cycle, addiction of computers cause destruction of life style. Playing computers at night and sleeping at noon are unusual life span for ordinary college students. It causes failing some courses, because of missing or late important class. Lastly, people who are addicted to computers seem to be dull, hard to talk to others, and selfish. Although some people meet each other in person, I think most people don’t. Furthermore they don’t need anyone, because the can meet a lot of similar people in fantasy game.
Spreading out of online game, however, has some beneficial for economy in my country. Online game like Starcraft, one of most famous tactical game, affect to let people who don’t know anything about computers buy and learn the computers. As a result of online game syndromes, computer and game room that can play or use computers in any time like 7-Eleven were opened throughout nation wide, so anyone can access the Internet via the stores. I cannot ignore merits of the online game for PC makers, economy, and society.
Response to “Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick” by Sung-wan Kang
The high-speed Internet lines can be found easily on campus these days. Many students take advantage of this technology for communication and studies. However, it also has a negative effect to students. In the article, “Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick”, Meg Kociemba emphasizes the Internet’s harmful effect. I agree with the author because many college students spend too much time for doing computer game, and it even created social problem. Like he mention in his article, the high-speed Internet interrupt their sleep cycles, time for studies, and relationships with other students, and hygiene.
Computer addiction is big social issue in Korea too. The high-speed Internet lines are very developed in Korea, and there are a lot of game rooms. Some students sit in front of computer, and play a game for more than 10 hours continuously without having a sleep or eating. It really hurt their health and social activities. In some case, some people need a medical care. I even had a chance to see an article which is about a man who died while he was doing computer game in Korea. Computer games reduce the time for students to meet other friends. They can meet other friends over the Internet, but it is not like meeting people in real world. It also reduces the time for studying and doing school assignment. Meg Kociemba mentioned about only college students in his article. I believe, however, computer addiction is a very serious problem to high school students too.
The high-speed Internet lines are very useful tool for students. How student should use computer is student’s responsibility. Even though computer game is really fun, students need to control themselves and have to stop at a certain point. Computer addiction might destroy one’s life.
My reaction to the article, by Islam Ahmed
I think the author of the article “Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick” is right in some points and is wrong in others. I think the author is right when she states that the internet addiction interferes with sleep cycles and time dedicated to homework; however, I think that the article is wrong when it states that students who suffer from internet addiction are timid, and unable to manage their first year away from home.
I agree that internet addiction interferes with sleep cycles and time dedicated to homework, because I have a lot of friends and relatives who like to play games over the internet who really spend hours and hours on-line, so they end up with less work done and time devoted to their homework. Moreover, students who are addicted to the internet suffer from interfered sleep cycles, due to the amount of time they spend playing these games. Furthermore, students who develop computer addiction have a tendency to loose relationships with their peers because they do not go out with their friends.
However that does not mean that they are shy or unable to manage their first year away from their parents. Because a lot of students who play these games are out going, social and very friendly. It is just that these students are interested in playing action games. In addition to that, some students tend to play these type of games because they are bored and they do not have places on campus to go to. Furthermore, people who like computers are usually the kind of people who like these games. I even had a computer teacher who used to talk in class about how much he likes this type of games and how much time he spends playing them.
In conclusion, computer addiction is a hobby that a lot of students like to do. However, doing this hobby compulsively results in harming the student him/her self. Therefore, students should be more careful with these games, by not letting them affect their other daily activities like going out with friends and doing homework.
Response to Gulsah Gunenc’s response to “Students find cyber habit hard to kick" (AGATHA)
In Gulsah Gunenc’s response, she states that she was agree with the author of “Students find cyber habit hard to kick”, Meg Kociemba’s point of views of how some students have developed their addictions and how it will be harmful for them, also she mentioned that for international students because computer is the main tool for them to connect with their countries. As the technology is improving so fast, computer becomes a part of tool of our studies, we do homework, quizzes, research or even apply to universities online, how can a student today live without computer today? Since we are having more and more contact with computer, we are getting to know more and more functions on it, so some of us then learn to play computer games, entering the fantasy world of computer and being sucked into it. As time goes by, not only the college students, more and more computer users are being attracted by computer games, the market is getting bigger and bigger also comes along with lots of professional game designers. Gulsah Gunenc’s have raised a point that most of the students who are addicted to computer will stay in cyber cafes for a whole day, while others are playing at home but this kind of addiction is now disturbing all their sleeping cycles, hygiene, healthy diet and even academic achievement. What is worse is that these students are usually “the bored, shy or unable to handle their first time away from home” according to Maressa Orzack, which cyber habit is building an even higher barrel between them and the surroundings, once they get into it, it is not easy to pull them out again like addiction on drugs. As we are putting more and more time on study, we should try to spend more time with our families rather than playing games on computer, as we are seeking more in the area of technology, we should continue the connections between human beings and never forget about why we have created the first telephone.
Response of Kiwook’s article from Seungho Song
I read Kiwook’s article that states his opinion by showing his experience. Basically I agree his idea, and I felt he has similar experience with my experience. There are many people, although they play internet game very long time, have very good relationship between friends. It means Meg Kociemba’s opinion has some problem. She said to play internet game ‘Everquest’ is so harmful to college students because it takes up a lot of time to make friends and to do school work. We partly disagree with her opinion because her idea is so radical that cannot be true. In Korea, there are many people who play internet game so long time, but we can find players who have many friends easily. I saw many internet games provide players the chance to make friend while they play that game. For example, during game time, they talk about their tactics and enemy team. As their game go on, they are getting friendly, and sometimes become real friends. I think this is another way to make new friends, but I felt Meg Kociemba think to meet and talk face to face is only one way to make friends. Kiwook’s article points out this, and I agree with this point.
In addition, Kiwook said how to use computer properly is pretty important to us. As everybody knows, nowadays to know how to use computer is an indispensable and essential condition, therefore we should use this powerful tool carefully. If we know how to use this powerful tool properly, it will be helpful to make new friends and to do important thing in not only school but also home, and society. Computer is not always dangerous machine, it will be helpful.

Respond to Jong Sik's response of "Students Find Cyber Habits Hard to Kick" by SE HOON KIM
In the Jong Sik Park’s response, he mentioned addiction of computer is the biggest social problem in Korea, however I think it is not quite bad one, because it is a transitional period that people who are not interested in computers are made themselves familiar with it. They need time for new trend. In its process, misunderstanding the change causes some side effects such as computer addiction.
Jong Sik represents online game for computer addiction. I think online gaming is a kind of hobby that people like and addict to do it. Most people don’t play for 5 or 6 hours at a time. A small number of people who are addicted to computers cannot represent all of them. Also, he states about game room that teenagers have meal and stay all night, and it causes health problem. In my opinion, at least game room is a good place for teenagers because there is no a place where teenager can go to play with friends especially in Korea. Moreover, if game room does not exist in Korea, what they would do or go. I believe that using computer is much better than drinking beer.
Respond to Min Wang's response of "Students Find Cyber Habits Hard to Kick" by Byungseob Lee
I read Min Wang’s respond writing of “Students Find Cyber Habits Hard to Kick.” I agree with her response because of some reasons about relationships and losing capabilities.
First of all, Korea also has some problems of the computer addiction like China. We can use a computer everywhere in cafés, entertainment shops and so forth, so it seems to be convenient to reach it, but it causes computer addiction. Because we can use a computer, people are addicted to overuse a computer, so I also think that the government has to prevent increasing shops.
Second, I firmly agree with her opinion of isolating from friends and family in her response of the article. If their parents buy a computer to their son or daughter, it can be a good tool for studying but it also has side-effects. I watched news about the computer addiction that a middle school student played game everyday, so her father was angry and her father threw out the computer monitor out of the window. After I read this news, I felt bad for her father, irresponsibility of her works, and indifference of her family.
After I read her response writing of the article, my opinion about the computer addiction is firmed. I thought that computers are just tools and people are sometimes addicted it. I unconsciously ignored the hazard of the computer addiction, but it can be a dangerous tool. We have not to overuse a computer, and we merely use a computer for references.
Reaction to Agatha's response about the article by Gulsah Gunenc
In her response to the article"Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick",Agatha mentioned really important points.I really agree with her about the number of addicted people is increasing every single day.Computers are playing huge role in our lives. But the bad side of it some people try to make profits over it.Like she said the profits of huge game companies getting bigger and bigger. They are creating new games and marketing them.I know these addicted people looking for new games to spend hours. It's true playing games for a while is useful for mental activity until it becomes harmful to you both mentally and physically.I always prefer thinking like this for everything.I don't think nobody will disagree with the harmful effects of computer addiction. If you spend your hours infront of the computer you can't do your daily routines like eating well, cleaning and this kind of needs. She mentioned other really important point; The use of computers is getting common for everybody but we are loosing our spiritual food.We are not reading books as much as we used to.Because we spend hours infront of the computers instead of reading books and opening our imagery power.
Response of Min Wang's article by Jongsik Park
I picked Min Wang’s reaction of “Student Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick”, because I wonder how people who are living in other country think about computer addiction problem. I guess Korea is the one of best IT country in the world so that many Korean are getting suffered from computer addiction.
However, according to her respond, some people in China are getting suffered from computer addiction too. I am sorry to hear her cousin who had been flunking out term. Since her cousin is mania of computer games, he could not handle his own stuff that he had to do for school. I think computer addiction hurts not only himself but also his parents. In fact, many parents have complained about their children who have had computer addiction.
What if your child spends most of times in front of computer instead of playing sports? As you know, it is good for the health to take a moderate amount of exercise every day. Moderate exercise could help not only to promote the growth of child but also to have health mind.
Computer addiction has snatched conversation away from parents and children. Children turn to their computers right after class so that conversation between parents and children are getting decreased. Her cousin didn’t care about his grade; moreover, he has not talked with his parents. No matter how his parents teach and encourage him, he is only focusing on playing games and chatting with others instead of parents.
I don’t think Min Wang’s cousin got in serious trouble, however, there is still possibilities for him to develop situation worse. Playing games, living in cyber world is not that easy to quit like cigarettes and marihuana. I feel like computer are getting become one of drugs especially to youths. Computer surely is necessary tool to search for particular article or check e-mail. However, you should keep in mind that excess in computer works could disturb and ruin their own lives and family.
Response of Jongsik's article by Byeongkoo, KIM
I totally agree with Jongsik's article because I had lived for 29years in the Republic of Korea before I came to the United States.
There are many computer rooms called game-room in my country. Game-rooms are one of the biggest problems in my country. Many teenagers use these places to play games or chat with other people without their parents' interruption. Game-rooms also use misconducts students to stay at whole night. Moreover, most of the students like to play computer game, such as "Starcraft", or "Linizui" with their friends, so they should go there. They spend too much time to play games with their friends and other people because these games could raise their rank. If they do not go there, they also could not make a relationship with friends in my country. According to current tendency, students indulge themselves in fantasy word games - it becomes an addiction.
In my opinion, the computer addiction is injurious to students because it interferes with their school lives and destroys social activities while some students also use it to search some articles of school work, manage their homepage, and check e-mail. Therefore, computer addiction is one of the biggest problems in the world.

Some people say using an internet provides students many advantages. Others say an internet takes up time to be with friends and to do important thing in school and home, so it is harmful to people. In my opinion, if we use an internet carefully, it will be very helpful to us. If we use internet well, we can be more sociable and we can do our job more efficiently by using computer. I think whether computer addiction is harmful or not depend on how to use computer.
Basically I agree with writer’s opinion that computer addiction takes up a lot of time and makes people unsociable. Because I have lived in Korea which has well developed internet line, I saw many people have the computer addiction. They spend a whole day to play game, and don’t want to go outside because of the internet game. Usually they have many problems to socialize with other people and to do an important thing in their own group. Therefore we should care when we use on-line computer. However I think Orzack shows us internet’s bad side too much, so she should show internet’s good side like the chance to make new friends on the chatting site. She said playing internet game makes people unsociable, but I saw really many people became friendly by playing internet game and do their job very efficiently by using internet.
As you can see in my essay, usually a computer addiction can be harmful to college students when we use computer carelessly, but sometimes it can be helpful to students because it provides information to study or chance to meet new friends on the web site

Response of "Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick" by Jongsik Park
Nowadays computer addiction has been getting the biggest social problem all over the world, especially in Korea. Since 1990’s as computer industry being developed, computer has come into wide use. According to one statistic, people, young and old, men and women all alike are using computer at least one hour in a day to check e-mail, play computer games and maintain his/her homepage.
However, some people have spent too much time with computer using to interrupt their own lives. I know some people who are seating in front of computers and spending more than 6 hours in a day as if they were working in computer companies as their jobs. They usually have used computers to play games such as ‘the Starcraft’, ‘the Linizui’, ‘the Rainbow six’ that are required for players to play much time to keep their rank in a game. Some people formed a group to analyze and develop game skill. Surprisingly, those people in some groups have spent more than 10 hours for one game.
People who have symptoms of computer addiction have meals in computer game room; moreover, they have stayed up whole night for playing games and went to bed in the morning. That is to say, playing games make them switch the night and day lives. The pattern of switched night and day lives breaks the rhythm of their lives; furthermore, they don’t get enough opportunities to make friends and play some recreations. All of these bad aspects make them negativists since they don’t work on positive lines to play and hang out with friends. I think few years later, they could have only one friend, the computer that they have played with.
I definitely agree with the article by Meg and computer addiction would be bigger problem to younger children.

Hello everyone I am going to respond Min Wang blogg, I agree with Min Wang article because in his blogg we can read an experience of computer addiction his little cousin has been affected by the computer addiction he inform in the blogg that his cousin like the computer games and he was jumping school from school his whole family is disappointed with him but they don't can do more. In all the cases of computer addiction are the similar things bad things the computer is great tool for learn but also is a big bomb that can kill you in any moment of your life. We need to learn that the technology is no all the time good for the society in some cases can be dangerous and can bring bad things to the people. In my opinion I think that if we educated the students to how to use the computer we can help in a very good form our society and the childrens of our society the parents are very necesary in this issue.

Respond to “Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick” by Byungseob Lee
According to Meg Kociemba in "Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick"(The Ohio State Lantern, April 11, 2002) computer addiction is harmful to students. I also believe that computer addiction causes some problems, principally because of destroying their relationships and losing their time for works or studies.
One compelling reason to support is relationships with their friends. This factor is important because they may spoil their relationships of friends, family, and so on by much using the computer. Mark, for example, likes playing games and he frequently plays games after the class even before the class, so he did not have bad relationships of friends and family because he does not have times to meet his friends, but he has some friends in the on-line. Even though he has some friends in the on-line, it can make him anthrophobia as isolating from the society.
Another consideration that has shaped my idea to support is time to study or work. This idea carries great weight since they have to do works and studies. For instance, Mark always plays games before and after the class, so he does not have time to study or work. He did get the bad grades for his courses. Students can find some information by using the computer, but it may happen to side effects.
Thus, I firmly believe that computer addiction has injurious effects for students. Their relationships and times provide ample justification to support my idea, but I can not ignore about the Internet because there are some friendships, information for works and so forth in the on-line.
Response to “Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick” By Byeongkoo, KIM
The question of whether computer is a more advantageous tool to students or not is complex and the answer requires careful consideration. I believe, however, that the idea of an author, Meg Kociemba, that computer addiction is very injurious to students is more benefits, principally because of interrupting their social activities and school lives.
One compelling reason to support that computer addiction is disadvantageous to students is to intrude upon their social business. This idea is important because human relationship is one of the most important things in our lives. For example, when I worked at the Samsung Electronic Company in my country, I met many other people. They helped me reach my goal when I need. Like this, if students use the computer to play some fantasy world game, they could not have enough time to make a relationship with friends. According to current tendency, computer addicts should become more inactive and shy people.
Another consideration that has shaped my choice to support that computer is harmful to students is to interfere with their school lives. This factor carries great weight since all students should study in school. For instance, I spent more time to play Korean traditional games, such as Gostop which is one of the most famous games in my country when I lived in Boston. It interfered with my sleep cycle and preparing to take a TOEFL test because I played the game until 3AM. Like this, computer addicts could not have time to do homework and take a sleep if they indulged themselves in games.
Thus, in the question of whether computer is a more useful tool to students or not, I firmly believe that computer addiction is harmful to students. Interfering with student's school lives and social activities provide ample justification for selecting this idea.

Hello everyone I was analyzing deeply this article about Cyber Habits and I think that is a great problem in the American society because our society is every day more advance in the technology and the people cant live without a computer In this article we can see the effects of the computer addiction in the student life the bad things than that can bring. The article inform that students who develop a computer addiction tend to be those students who are bored, shy o unable to handle their first time away from home and with the computer those people feel that the computer is they best friend. The computer addiction is a very dangerous thing because in some case the person need medical help to beat that addiction. In my opinion I think that computer is a great tool for college successful but is not correct depend all the time of the computer also in the article said that the signs of addiction in college students include the loss of relationships, failure to meet goals in the school and the inability to leave pretending to be someone else on-line those are only few effects of the computer addiction.

Response to “some students find cyber habit hard to kick” BY AGATHA
The main idea about the article is computer becomes an addiction for some
students, and how harmful it is for the students in the author Meg Kociemba’s
point of view. The author has been using some referring from an authorized
psychologist Maressa Orzack in Harvard University which makes the article
more persuasive and scientific. He thinks that computer is now a very
academically important tool for students while some of them have developed an
addiction, according to him these are usually the shy, bored or unable to
handle their first time away from home and were trying to escape from the real
world then turn into the fantasy world of gaming. According to Orzack, this
addiction will cause students to lose relationships, failure to meet goals in
school and the inability to leave the computer alone also with bad hygiene and
a messy sleeping cycle. This addiction is hard to get rid of like eating
disorder and will take up a lot of valuable time for students in referring to Orzack.
In my opinion, students who have developed an addiction are getting more and
more, it could be easily tell by how much revenue are the giant games companies
earning. Playing some computer game in a controlled period of time is good for
exercising the brain and relaxation by turning the mind of study to something
more fun. But I agree with the points in the article by Meg Kociemba, the
addiction can actually be harmful for a healthy student life. A very popular
game called Counter Strikes has been some many game players’ favorite, but for
some of them, once they get in it, they can never get out of it. Some players
just keep on playing it for days without drinking anything or eating and some
of them even end up dieing, I start wondering how powerful computer games can
be. After fulfilling material lives, students are turning into actualization
of their own instead of absorbing more spiritual food like books.

Reaction to the article by Gulsah Gunenc
In this article,"Students Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick"(The Ohio State Lantern,April 11,2002),Meg Kociemba tries to explain computer addiction with the help of Maresso Orzack's ideas.
I really agree with Meg Kociemba that almost for all students, computers are really important in their life.Especially for the foreign students, internet connection and computers are the only way to learn what's going on in their country. In my free times i usually read newspapers and watch Turkish sitcoms over internet.
According to Orzack; For some students, the computer becomes more than a tool,it becomes an addiction which change their sleeping cycles, hurts relationships with friends and prevent them to do homework. That's really true.In my country most of the young people are getting addicted computers. The first thing they want from their family is a computer and that's so sad they want it to play games. Some of them who don't have a computer go to internet cafes and spend the day playing games. The worst part of it as Kociemba mentioned "it has no top level or ending".Unfortunately these young people are usually unsuccessful at school.
Orzack said "Students who develop computer addiction tend to be those students who are bored, shy or unable to handle their first time away from home".I don't know is it right to make generalization like this.Because I know lots of people who aren't in these situations, are addicted to computer.I think the most important thing is:these people don't have anything else to do.If they do sports or play music,They won't be addicted to computers.Otherwise these people try to find theirselves in the fantasy world not in the real world.I really agree that the computer addiction isn't a easy problem.Becuse it will effect everything in addicted people's life.As Orzack said "You can't just tell people to stop ".These addicted people should get a professional help.
Response of Kiwook Jung's article from MIN WANG
I read the reactions of Kiwook Jung to the article on cyber habits. From his own experience, he tells us the harm of computer addition to his study and life. It seems the computer addition is not rare in young people, though I have no experience about it. I agree most of what he said, however, I have different option about what he said about the social function of the computer.
First, I agree Kiwook Jung's option about making friends through the internet. You meet new friends when you play internet game or chat on the internet. However, I think this kind of social activities is not suit for young people, especially for students. The most advantage on the internet is that you do not need hide yourself or you can become a total different 'you'. That is, you can say what you want to say. That is your freedom. Because of the unreality, the young people are easy to be lost when facing so many information. They have lower capability to discriminate the people they meet on the internet. It is very often to hear the stories the young girl was cheated by the lies of her 'internet friends'. To those who make friends through internet game, I think it is not an encouraged thing. Your partner always has a computer addition like you. In some meaning, you are friends, However, they usually affect you passively instead of help you because they face the same problem with you. If one has many friends like those, I think it is not a good thing, overcome the computer addition become more different.

In his article, "Students find cyber habit hard to kick", Meg Kociemba discusses the syndrome and harm of computer addition which exists in college student community. I totally agree the option of the author. I would like to say the computer addition is more harmful for middle school students than college students.
In China, many parents give the computer to their children as a gift to enter the middle school. They have good will not to leave their children back in the information world. Undoubtly, the computer become an essential tool that intrusive most people's life and it bring us efficiency, convenient and oppuntiny. However, the person who is in the middle school age is most vulnerable for the surrounding, they are tending to affect by the new things and lack the capability of self-control. It is frustrate thing for parents to find their children use computer as a tool of entainment rather than of study. Monitoring the use of computer is a big challenge for many parents who grew up without computer; they usually lost about what their children are doing. Even for those parents who are good at computer skills, how can they keep their eyes on it all the time?
I am very sad about the news that my little cousin had been flunking out this term, when there will be one and half year left to graduate from the high school. Actually, he is very smart. Unfortunately, he has been additived by computer games since the last year of his elementary school. He began to escape from classes and his grade has been falling dramatically. He could not help himself. Of course, my aunt refused his request about a computer, but you know there are so many computer bars and internet bars in most areas of China. To prevent him from the outside environment, he was transferred different schools three times, one year with my uncle in Beijing, two years with my parents who are teachers, then one year with his mother until he was abandoned. My whole family is so disappointed after so many efforts. We still do not know his future.
Maybe for most people the computer addition is not a big problem. But I would like to say it may be very serious for some people, especially for those teenagers. We should not ignore it.
Response of “Student Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick” by Kiwook Jung.
Today, many people are getting used to use internet access for their every day work. But, in some cases, using internet too much causes computer addicted people. In this article, “Student Find Cyber Habit Hard to Kick” (The Ohio State Lantern, April 11, 2002), Meg Kociemba states bad affections of computer addiction. I understand and agree with what Kociemba wrote because some part of the article sounds like me. Orzack said in this article, “Computer addiction interferes with sleep cycles, time devoted to homework and huts relationship with friends.” Like what she said, one time I had an irregular sleep habit. I sometimes didn’t sleep at all to play internet games, and slept next whole day. It caused missing important classes so I was almost failing that semester. In addition, it also made me skipping meals so I couldn’t keep healthy.
But, I partly disagree with third paragraph of the article that Orzack said addicted people do not go to social activities. Of course, I think that it might be possible to lose their friends if they do not hang around with their friends because of playing internet games alone. On the other hand, I also think that we can make some new friends while we are playing internet games. I have some experience of it. I have some friends who I met on-line, and I still keep in touch with them. I think that making friends on-line and playing games together are sorts of social activities.
Like Kociemba and Orzack said, using computer too much may cause lots of problems; however, using computer properly may be a powerful tool for our lives.

My name is Min Wang. I am from China and this is my first quarter in OSU. I choosed Actuarial Science as my major because I am not bad in mathematics and I have some background in economics. Before I came here, I was in Boston for one and half year to accompany my husband who is pursuing his P.H.D degree in MIT.
After graduating from the Hunan city university in my country, I worked in Beijing Real Estate Bureau for four years as a statistician.
I enjoyed the life in Boston, where I have a few very nice friends. Unfortunately, they are all Chinese, so I made little progress in my English. I am getting used to the life as a student although it is not easy, especially in language. I hope to improve my English in this class and share our experience with each other. Nice to meet you.
My name is Emi Aizawa, and I am Japanese. This is my 2nd quarter at OSU. Before I came here, I was in Seattle for 2 years. I believe it is one of the most beautiful and safe cities in the U.S., so even though I have stayed Ohio for 6 month and been used to live here, I miss Seatlle a lot. My major is Psychology because I want to be a school counselor at an elementary school in Japan. I like cooking and having a party with my friends. During winter break, I started learnig snowboarding. Still now, I am not good at it, but I really love it !, so my goal in this quarter is study hard and improve my snowboarding skill.

Hi
My name is Jong Hyun Park, but you can call me Joey. I am came from Seoul Korea. I am 19 years old, and this is my second quater at the OSU. I came to the OSU, because buckeyes was the national champion last year. I enjoy watching ESPN not only about the OSU football, but also all kind of sports. I also like to play basketball, even if I am not that good at playing it. My major is Aeronautical and Astronautical Englineering. I have been interested in Aerospace, since I read a cartoon book called "Passport Blue" about an astronaut. Therefore, I am satisfided with my major which I love to learn about, and I expect to be a Junior or Senior to know lot more about Aerospce.
Before I came to the OSU, I stayed in the United States for about eight months as an foreign exchange student. Although I stayed in the United States with American family and learned English, I still face the hardship becasue of English such as wirting and speaking. Especially, in my opinion, speaking in English is the hardest among them. Thus, I am looking forward not only to improve and develop my English skill but also to get to know each other for better relationship by taking this course which is EDU T&L 107.
My name is Thomas yongwoo Kim, a finance major student of the Fisher College of Business. I’m from Seoul, Korea, and I’ve been four month to stay in Columbus and the United States, either. I have an English name because I was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where my father had studied. I was moved in Korea, when I was two. Therefore, unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to learn English.
I live with two Chinese roommates, Maotin Lin and Ching. Maotin is a doctoral student of genetic biology department. He is a very kind and considerate person who helps and care about me a lot. Another roommate Chung is an extremely silent person, who seems to prefer to be alone, therefore, until now; even though we lived in four month under the same roof, I do not know his full name. Sometimes, I’m just curious whether he is dead or alive.
This winter quarter is my second term in the OSU. I am taking four courses which are 20 credit hours. These are much tougher than previous courses, so I think I should spend much more time for preparing my classes. I am little bit relieved about ESL 107 class because Miss Crosby teach me again, following previous 106 class. However, it is a sort of pressure for me because I should show my progress of English writing to her.
The reason why I choose OSU and moved to United States, and spent my time, money and energy is I believe OSU is the most appropriate school to begin my study in the U.S and future success. Until I’ll get my bachelor’s degree, I expect that I will be a prepared man for the job or further degree.
My name is Sung-wan Kang. I am from Korea. I am a transfer student majoring international studies. I like to meet people from other countries since my major is international studies. This is my first quarter at OSU. I studied for 3 years in the University of Tenness at Martin. The reason why I transfer to OSU is that OSU has better program in international studies. I live with my wife and my son in Hilliard, Ohio. My son is 16 months old. I like travelling. I visited about 10 different cities in US. I hope I will have great time in Ohio.
My name is Byungseob Lee from South Korea. I am twenty-six years old. Before I came to Columbus, OH, I was in Boston, MA. I studied some universities and Colleges in Korea and America. When I was in Korea, I studied in Inha University, and my major was Ceramic Engineering. After finished military service, I studied in Boston University, Harvard University, just took the ESL classes, and I transfered to Quincy College in Boston area. I stayed in America for two Years. Welcome to the ED T&L 107 web log for winter quarter!
In order to get to know each other better, type up a short introduction of yourself and post it to the blogsite.
Here's a short introduction of myself.
My name is Cate Crosby, and I'm the instructor for the 8:30am section of 107 this quarter. This is my second year teaching in the ESL Composition Program at OSU. In addition to teaching, I'm also a doctoral student in the Department of Second and Foreign Language Education at OSU.
I've been teaching ESL for over 10 years in various contexts. I spent two years in Wuhan, China teaching at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, one year in Seoul, Korea teaching at Sisa Language Institute, and one year in Hamburg, Germany teaching at a Wirtschaftsgymnasium. I've also taught at Valparaiso University (Valparaiso, IN), the University of Toledo (Toledo, OH), and Juniatta College (Huntingdon, PA). Prior to coming to OSU, I was coordinating and teaching in an ESL program for Somali refugees here in Columbus.
In my free time I like to spend time outdoors biking, swimming and hiking. I also like listening to classical music, singing, looking at art, and cooking. My fiancee and I like (foreign) cars, mostly British or German, so we often go to car shows or on rallies together. We are getting married at the end of August this year.
I look forward to working with you this quarter. I think we'll learn a lot together.
Cate
